Vibe by Vacation: Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

Welp. Thanks to COVID-19 aka Corona-virus aka Rona aka Rona Mae Jenkins (coined by nvknows), I just had to postpone the last of my planned vacations til 2021. In 2019, I did not have the chance to go on any vacations so I was all ready to hit the road, book flights and get passport stamps to see some of my fave places and visit some of my fave people. One of which was to celebrate our 15th Deltaversary (Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.) with my line sisters (Gamma Tau Spring ‘05, Tuskegee University) in Puerto Vallarta, MX.

Since the majority of us are staying safe in our homes, I was inspired bring the dream destination to us by way of home decor.

“There’s Been A Change Inside My Life, and I Just Want You to Know….” Side 2

It has been a while since I have shared my personal life on this blog. When updating my linktree with the blog posts, I noticed that I have been heavy with sharing my creativity but not so much about little old me. Well this year has been quite tumultuous (like the mountain pictured) although we are only in the 2nd quarter. Now let me elaborate LOL.

PUT YOUR MONEY WHERE YOUR MOUTH IS……..

The year started on a high in January for I felt that 2019 was going to be my year. You know how sometimes you can just feel it in your bones, that all is going to work out in your favor. Well all that you put your heart, blood and sweat into. So with that fire in my belly, I decided to invest in Ball & Jacks Designs by joining Houzz’s marketing program in order to gain more clientele here in the Charlotte area. I was ready to expand my clientele beyond my friends, family and associates. I was ready to take my “hobby” and turn it into a real business.

GHOSTED………

Upon turning into a “Pro” by Houzz’s definition, I received 5 inquiries in the first week. The projects would cover my business expense of the Houzz membership + planned future investments easily for the year! However, I soon learned that all of these inquiries turned into ghost inquiries. I was starting to doubt my decision to invest so heavily in my dream. First month went by, with no responses. I was starting to despise the Houzz notifications popping on my phone screen and I was no longer excited about contacting potential clients. My self-esteem was shot. I was questioning if I should give up my entire dream.

I also decided to launch a special in February as a Valentine’s Day gift for potential clients. I offered a $214 space refresh special. I ran the special thorough the 28th hoping that I would gain enough clients to at least cover my business expenses until I get another job. All one had to do was click on the link and sign book their consultation via my website. Not. one. person. booked. I was shocked and highly disappointed. I was basically giving my gift away for free…..yet no one purchased the deal.

CONFIRMATION……

In March, I was finally able to speak with a potential client. Then the 1 turned into 3. My luck was turning around. Although none of the 3 have turned into signed contracts at this time, I felt like my investment was not in vain. In April, I received the greatest call from a potential client. Unlike the others, she sought out for me and loved my work. She and her husband weren’t ready to start the renovations right now, but it was in their plan for the year to transform their entire home AND she wants me to do it :-). It took everything in me to fight back the tears on that phone call. It had become clear in that moment that I received the what I started, Ball & Jacks Designs is what I am meant to do. It is a vision I was given as a child but it took decades for me to realize that my skill / dream as a decorator / designer is a gift. In a world of social media, it is tough to stay true to yourself and your gift when you see others doing whatever to make a quick buck and it making millions with thousands and millions of followers. But I am going to remain true and share my gift with the world everyday with words and photos through the vessels of social media, this blog, and the awesome people I encounter on this journey.

ARE YOU KIDDING ME?…….

In the middle of this, I learned on January 31st, that my job was being eliminated on February 1st. Yup, I was told that in less than 24 hours, that my job that was financially supporting our home AND Ball & Jacks Designs was being eliminated. After I had just moved into my brand new glass office as an upgrade. After I had just decorated said office space and shared its transformation on social media. After I had given up all of my free time to support a pivotal department solo for almost an entire year. I wasn’t bothered that I was losing my job….I was bothered how I was losing my job. I was in a role where I had to be connected to my phone and/or WiFi 24-7. Had not taken a real vacation for I couldn’t go anywhere I couldn’t plug in my laptop. (My idea of a vacation includes a passport and all electronic devices being locked up). The job came with great pay and good benefits, but I was dying. My anxiety was on 100 for I was constantly checking my email and hoping that nothing hit the fan so I could get my hair washed, nails done, or just take a nap. Thinking back, I do not think I suffered from anxiety until this job. Although I was stressed about finances, I was happy to be free. I no longer had to be stuck to a phone unless I wanted to. I could disappear for a day. I could get my hair and nails done without my phone in my hand. I could go to the gym anytime I felt like it. I could finally place my own well-being first and foremost. Corporate America was no longer my priority and it felt great.

SAVING GRACE & HAPPY PLACE……

Luckily I had decided to January to enroll in the Interior Design for your Home program at CPCC. I was even wise enough to pay for all of the courses up front. So I didn’t have to squeeze my budget further to make this investment work. The week after I lost my job, I started my first course, Color Theory / Interior Finishes for your Home. This week, I start the first day of the last course. For once in my life, I felt like I belonged. Don’t get me wrong, I was blessed with some awesome opportunities due to my engineering degree, but I have felt like a Fruit Loop in a box of Cheerios every since I entered Corporate America in 2006. Usually being the only female and person of color in a group of middle aged men did not allow me to be myself 100% of the time. Yet in the world of creatives, I am allowed and welcomed to be all of me. Loud, excited, nerdy, fashionable, and full of zest. I am also free to share my feelings and opinions. Polar opposite of the corporate world.

HELLO WAIST…..

In the new year, I also joined a gym. Although I was still working, I was able to find a local kickboxing gym near my home that offered early morning classes. Since my work days were unpredictable, I couldn’t hit a gym class after work. Every time I would sign up, some disaster would appear that would make me miss the class. However, the anxiety from my job was killing me slowly my adding stress to my mind and body thus throwing my hormones completely off. I was diagnosed with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) late last year, so it doesn’t take much for my hormones to be thrown off. My Dr. suggested that I add a workout regime to my already strict diet (allergic to dairy and soy). So I signed up for the 6 week challenge at the local gym. My goals for this challenge was to help me place my needs first AND to get me use to working out 4x a week minimum. It worked! Also I was able to lose a few pounds and a lot of inches during the challenge. Fast forward to today, although I am jobless, I have lost 30 lbs. The weight started melting away at an alarming rate when I lost my job. I took a month hiatus from the gym and somehow still managed to lose over 10 lbs.

CORPORATE AMERICA IS CALLING….

Yes I was enjoying my new freedom of not working BUT I was still looking for another job. Reality is one needs money to afford the necessities to live. My husband works but I have been the breadwinner our entire marriage. So my job loss was a big loss for our household. I finally got a break with a large company that was in need of my expertise and skills for their future state. However, after all of the interviews AND awaiting the job offer letter, somehow the company decided that it could not meet my compensation requirement. Although it was discussed and agreed upon prior to the first interview. Sigh. Back to the drawing board. I have applied for at least 50 jobs and only one got me into the first interview. I am either overqualified or I meet all of the requirements but they want to pay below average by a significant amount.

MY CURRENT STATE OF MIND….

Today I came across a video of Steve Harvey telling one of his audience members that maybe what you are looking for is not working out for you are meant to do something else. The gentleman was laid off from his job due to the company restructuring (sounds like me). He also shared that he had applied for may jobs but he keeps being told that he is overqualified or not qualified enough to make the money he was earning at his former employer (again sounds like me). Steve asked the gentleman if he had a gift. He said his gift were his kitchen skills. Steve told him to put his energy into his gift. He also shared that God has a way of pushing us out when we won’t take the jump like He keeps telling us to. So that rug being pulled from under you is a way for Him to make you work on what He wants you to work on. As soon as I finished watching the video, I started writing down what I could do. I came up with 5 actions I could do now.

  1. Meditate & Pray

  2. Share my journey / transition in my blog. This is the hardest thing for me to do. It makes me feel bad for making other feel bad for me for going through a storm. So I tend to keep it to myself.

  3. I noticed that one of my Interior Design companies here in Charlotte are looking for people with or without sales experience. I save their Instagram post every time but never follow through with sending my resume.

  4. The instructor for Color Theory (interior designer for 40 years) told me to keep in touch for I she said I have the gift of design and a strong eye for color.

  5. The day I packed up my new office at my former job, I had befriended the interior designer that was responsible for making our new offices possible. She told me to keep in touch as well.

So I have these contacts and opportunities. I wonder if any or all of these will work in my favor. You never know unless you try. Shoot at this point I have nothing to lose and much more to gain. As Steve Harvey told that audience member, “You already unemployed, what else can happen to you.” LOL. I will keep you posted as how things transpire.

Sometimes God has to make you uncomfortable in order to make you move.

Guest Bathroom Refresh

Well we are in the third month of 2019 and I have now completed another item on my to do list for the year that I shared earlier this year. Although this one did not make it on the blog, however, I did give the disclaimer that the list was subject to change. Oh and it did LOL. I decided to refresh our guest bathroom for it needed a little sprucing up. I am glad that I followed through for next month we will have family visiting. Now their bathroom looks like we truly care about them :-).

Ball & Jacks Designs Guest Bathroom Refresh BEFORE

BEFORE

The guest bathroom wasn’t “bad.” It was tastefully done as they are in most cookie cutter type homes in subdivisions: deep shower/tub combo with updated fixtures, neutral tile flooring, and neutral wall color. However, it did not have sufficient storage for guests and bathroom things. So I added the tall cabinet immediately the day we moved in. I found this cabinet that matched the finish and style of the sink cabinet perfectly at Bed, Bath & Beyond. I love that store and their 20% off coupons! Any who, that find added the much needed storage AND it filled up the large, awkward space between the sink and the toilet. To be frank, the space planning of the bathroom could have been greatly improved with replacing this little single sink cabinet with a longer one to add more counter space. However, that was not in the budget nor in my scope of this project. If I had replaced the cabinet, then I would have probably turned it into an entire remodel LOL.

So I began decorating the bathroom as the African art (see 2nd BEFORE pic) as my inspiration. Hence the shower curtain selection with the tribal vibe and burnt orange & grey palette. However, after a year of living in this home, I still had not hung them. I took this as a sign that I did not feel that they belonged there. To be honest, I would only use this bathroom in emergencies such as my husband is in our master bedroom and I waited to long to use the one downstairs LOL. That was a big sign that I needed to give our little guest bathroom a makeover.

“If you can’t stand to go in that room, then it is time to give it a makeover. Don’t know how? Then call me :-).”

AFTER

Since the room doesn’t have any sunlight and the only source of light is from the fixture about the mirror, I decided that the color palette needed to be light and bright. I was not certain what color I wanted for the shower curtain so I allowed my gut to make the decision. While looking for a new toothbrush holder to match our glass jars in our master bathroom, I came across this linen look / feel white shower curtain. I loved the fabric and I loved how it had substantial weight to it but it was sheer enough to allow light to come into the shower. I tend to lean towards white linens for guest spaces for it gives the feeling of clean (think of your fave hotel) and it is easy to keep clean thanks to bleach. Both of my guest bedrooms are decorated heavily in different hues of white (check out Projects Abbey and Noble).

Shortly after I found the shower curtain, I found the large artwork at At Home. I was there looking for art for my laundry room, but came this piece kept talking to me every time I walked by it. Eventually I broke down and purchased it. I did not know at the time where I was going to install this piece (I was so focused on the laundry room), but I have learned to follow my gut and purchase pieces that speak to me. Often time I find the perfect spot for it minutes upon entering the house. The piece fit perfectly over the toilet and it brought much needed color in the room.

“If it speaks to you, then it was meant for you. It is often better to decorate with your gut than to follow a blueprint or your Pinterest board.”

During this same trip to At Home, I found two marble and wood containers on clearance that were perfect to store Q-tips and cotton rounds for guests. Also they added decor to the open shelving in the floor cabinet. I love how the tops tie in perfectly with the teak floor mat and the acacia vase. I decided to fill the third shelf with hand towels rolled. I love to decorate in threes.

The last addition to the room was to add the hooks for guests to place their towels. Originally the design had no where for towels (wet or dry) to be hung. This led to guests hanging their wet towels across the shower rod. So I finally found the perfect styled hooks that coordinated with the cabinetry and vibe of the space. This At Home find can hold more than enough towels, robes, etc to accommodate our guests. Also it keeps this woman happy….no more towels on the shower rod (Linda Belcher happy dance).

I elected to keep the teak mat and acacia vase for it balanced out the espresso cabinetry and white linens. However, I also decided to place the wastebasket and scale under the sink to keep the space from feeling cluttered. Now we have a calm, inviting and beautiful guest bathroom ready for all of our visitors this year!

My Closet Transformation

Hola! A few of my Instagram followers had questions on the pieces I used to organize and tidy up my accessories in my walk-in closet that I share with my hubby. So I decided to blog about it :-).

I have a healthy appetite for all things accessories. My original weakness were shoes, then designer handbags, then it transitioned to scarves, and now I am obsessed large statement pieces of jewelry. Last year sometime I joined a jewelry subscription box and it has expanded my collection quick, fast and in a hurry. So in order to prepare space for the February pieces, I had to get organized.

Ball & Jacks Designs Closet Organization

SHELVING

I started off with the bookcase I found at IKEA. I think at the time it was on sale for $20 or $25. I was happy that it was way under budget, deep enough to hold all of my bags but fit perfectly in the little niche in our closet. Also I loved the fact that it has a top shelf where I could place my jewelry.

Initially I had my bags in their respective dust bags. This caused two problems in the shelving. One, it caused the bags to slip off the metal shelves. Two, I kept forgetting which bags I owned LOL. I have been in search for the perfect shade of red and I already owned it LOL.

JEWELRY STORAGE

Necklaces

I have alot of large bib necklaces and long necklaces. So I needed two solutions to keep them from being lost or tangled. For the bib type necklaces, I lay them on a necklace display similar to ones you see in the jewelry store. They now come in all different materials. I lean towards the wood tones for I love anything made by Indian artisans similar to this one. However you can find velvet ones and less expensive variations of the same idea at your local Marshall’s, HomeGoods, TJMaxx or craft stores such as Hobby Lobby and Michaels. For the long necklaces, I decided to hang them from the wall. You could use a pretty display hanger as I did OR you can hang them from nails in your wall. I am just not big on a lot of holes in my walls….so I went for the hanger in which I only had to make one hole in the wall :-).

Bracelets

The same goes for bracelets. Thanks to my sister from another mister (and misses) gifted me my first Alex & Ani bracelet (Wonder Woman), I have been obsessed with purchasing them every time they have a ridiculous sale. So I use a bracelet display to store them in a way that I can easily see what I own. For me, I struggle with out of sight out of mind. Just like the necklace displays, you can find bracelet displays at your local home decor and craft stores. Mine is similar to this one, although I found mine at HomeGoods. I actually need to find another one….maybe with 3 tiers for some of my Sassy Jones boutiques cuffs do not fit on the current tiers I have.

Earrings

I have been collecting earrings since I was able to convince my parents to allow me to get my ears pierced in middle school. However over time I end up losing one or both. So I was elated to find this at Michaels to keep them together. I love that is spends so I can feel like Cher in the movie “Clueless” when making my selection LOL.

Rings

So I do not wear many rings due to wearing a wedding ring daily. However, I have a few statement pieces that I like to slide on from time to time. I came across a ring dish that coordinated with my other jewelry storage solutions. Mine is the same silhouette as this one but it is gold. I like that I can just slide my rings on the “cactus” for safe keeping.

Art.....My First Day of Class

Hola! This week I attended the first class of an Arts & Accessories course I am taking this semester at a local community college here in Charlotte, NC. I for one am not a stranger to or fearful of curating and selecting pieces of art for a space. I would have to thank wonderful mother for my love of art in general. She is an uber talented freelance artist that can take any medium to create images that will put you in awe.

This week’s class I learned there are three categories of art: representational, abstract, and non-objective.

Representational

Representational artwork aims to truly represent its subject in reality. Subcategories under representational art include Realism, Impressionism, Idealism, and Stylization. Although some of these forms are taking steps toward abstraction, they still fall under the category of representational. This category of art is the oldest of the three types and is also the easiest to comprehend.

Examples of representational art include Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa, Rockwell paintings, and cave paintings.

Abstract

Abstract artwork aims to take real subjects and present them in a way that is opposite of our reality. This may take the form of emphasizing lines, shapes, or colors that transform, simplify, or distort the subject. Although I appreciate art in all forms (thanks to my mother), Abstract artwork is my favorite. I just love how artists distort reality and introduce shapes and colors that would not exist on the subject in reality. I have a print of Grace Jones in which she is depicted with sky blue skin and red eyes. It is clearly Grace Jones but the use of colors and lines to accentuate her famous cheekbone structure and hairstyle illustrates her fierce personality.

Examples of abstract art includes works of Pablo Picasso, Mark Rothko, and Yayoi Kusama.

Non-Objective Art

The third type of art is often mistaken for Abstract art although it is entirely different. Many people have difficulty in understanding the differences between the two. However , the clear difference lies in the subject matter chosen. If the artist begins with a subject from reality, the artwork is considered to be abstract. If the artist is creating with no reference to reality, then the work is considered to be non-objective. Non-objective art is to use the elements and principles of art in a way that results in visually stimulating work.

Examples of non-objective artwork includes the works of artists Wassily Kandinsky, Naum Gabo, and Kazimir Malavich.

Which category of art speaks to you?

Fashionably Inspired: 2019 GRAMMY Awards Edition

I truly enjoyed watching this year’s Grammy Awards that aired on February 10th. It started off on a high note when the host Alicia Keys introduced her sisters: Lady Gaga, Jennifer Lopez, Jada Pinkett-Smith and my fave FLOTUS MICHELLE OBAMA! They came down the steps holding hands looking fearless and fierce. The true illustration of sister girls. There were some questionable performances (as usual) but overall I enjoyed the show. I truly enjoyed the fashions that came down the red carpet. There were so many that I LOVED but only a few looks inspired me to translate them into home decor.

Home Staging Class Project

If you follow me on social media (click the Instagram and Facebook icons below to check them out!), then you have probably seen that I have been taking interior design courses during my downtime. I have a natural knack for pulling a space together, however, I thought it would be fun to take a few courses and earn an interior design certificate. I love learning and I love meeting new people. Taking the courses combine the two. In addition to the coursework to obtain an interior design certificate, I elected to register for a quick 3-day Home Staging course. The first class, our instructor, a local interior designer, taught us how to stage a home with the goal of selling the property. By the end of the class, we were asked if any of us wanted to volunteer to have their home staged by the class. I wanted to volunteer as tribute (LOL) but I was afraid my home was already “staged” for it is my calling card for my interior design business. Looking back, I am glad that I did not volunteer for I would have missed out on the awesomeness that is my classmate’s home. She is a fantastic artist and I would have never known that if I had volunteered.

So on the second day of class, we all met at her home and were divided into groups of 2 or 3. My teammate and I were responsible for staging the Master Suite which included the bedroom, bathroom, and sitting area. We signed up for those rooms quickly for they are both our fave rooms in any home :-).

Master Suite

My classmate’s home was huge for we staged 14 rooms. So I decided to share my favorite transformations in the galleries below. You will notice that some of the items were used in several of the rooms. For example, the yellow pillows from our Master Suite furniture made their debut in just about every room in the house LOL. My teammate and I should have charged a fee for using out pretty pillows LOL.

Study

Living Room

Guest Bedroom

This course was a lot of fun and I learned quite a few things when staging a home.

  1. It is easier to stage a home for buyers than it is to decorate a home for its owners.

  2. One must remove the personality of the owner(s) to successfully stage a home. It gives the imagination of potential buyers a chance to envision their lives in your home.

  3. Greenery is better than flowers….less expensive and live longer.

  4. White towels and linens make bathrooms and bedrooms look clean and fresh. It gives the illusion that everything is brand new and never been used. Think like your favorite hotel chains.

  5. Pops of color on neutral furniture does wonders for listing photos.

Which of the shared transformation are your favorite?

Faux It: "RHOA" edition - Nene Leakes

I have FINALLY caught up on Real Housewives of Atlanta during my hiatus and baby, Nene’s new home was giving me life! I am not usually keen on white spaces; however, I love the glamorous touch Nene gave her Mediterranean home. I will always love the color combination of black, white and grey. It is calming and if done well, then it can be fabulous as Mrs. Leakes showed the world through her interview by People magazine.

In the interview she stated that she picked out everything herself. Since majority if not all her pieces are custom, it will be difficult to find the exact replica. However, I can definitely give you the glam monochromatic vibes as she did in her GAWGEOUS new home! Just keep scrolling to check out how to Faux It!

The SAG Awards were everything! Unfortunately I had to live the event through pictures and commentary the next morning. I have early am kickboxing classes on the weekdays, so staying up past my bedtime is not an option when I am working on my summer shape. I was elated to find out that “Black Panther” earned and won the top honor of the night! By looks of their red carpet looks, they could have easily won the best dressed cast as well, if it was offered.

As I scrolled through the images of the SAG Awards, I was immediately translating the fashions into spaces or home decor. So you know I had to share my visions on my blog.
